Course Description

A general consideration of the discipline of English, the most useful materials and approaches, and the objectives, problems, and issues in the study of language and literature. Prerequisite: Admission to MA program in English or permission of the instructor.

Research Methodology

  • To recognize and apply the research methodology needed for the critical study of the literatures, rhetoric, or language of English.

Analysis

  • To identify and discriminate among literary, rhetorical, or linguistic theories and history to inform the critical study of English.

Content Knowledge

  • To recognize and summarize the multiple fields of English and the current issues within them.

Attendance/Participation:

In an accelerated class format, attending every class meeting (August 24, August 31, September 14, September 21, September 28, and October 5) is a minimum requirement for receiving a grade of A in the course.

Participants should attend class having read, prepared, or completed any assigned work; should stay for the entire class period; and should engage in class activities as fully as they are able.

Missing one class meeting or part of one class meeting will not result in a grade reduction. Missing more than one class meeting or parts of multiple class meetings may result in a reduction in the final course grade.
