Course Description

Introduction to a range of sociological, historical, ideological, and philosophical dimensions shaping education and schooling in the U.S. and how these inform contemporary educational practices grounded in concerns for social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Critically analyze claims, arguments, artifacts, or information.

  • Construct coherent, evidence-based arguments.

Course-specific Objectives

  • Analyze the historical and ideological dimensions that influenced the formation of schooling and continue to shape education within the U.S.

  • Evaluate different philosophical perspectives in relation to critical pedagogy and social justice education.

  • Examine ways in which power, privilege, and injustice operate implicitly and explicitly in schools and society.

  • Think critically and reflexively about ways to embody equitable and inclusive practices.

  • Explain how gender is produced within social institutions and how these institutions affect individual lives.

  • Analyze the mutual constitution of gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, nationality, and religion
