Principles of Macroeconomics

Course Description

Introduction to macroeconomic principles and analysis. Topics include the national income, the monetary system, inflation, business cycles, fiscal policy, the national debt, exchange rates, balance of payments, and economic growth.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify important positive macroeconomic issues present in the economy. (UNCG GSB SLO 1 & 2; Bryan School SLO 1)

  • Identify important public policy and other normative macroeconomic issues present in the economy. (UNCG GSB SLO 1 & 2; Bryan School SLO 1)

  • Choose appropriate models and other frames of reference for addressing macroeconomic issues. (UNCG GSB SLO 2; Bryan School SLO 1)

  • Gather information appropriate to addressing macroeconomic issues. (UNCG GSB SLO 1 & 2; Bryan School SLO 1)

  • Use appropriate information, models, and other frames of reference to analyze macroeconomic issues. (UNCG GSB SLO 1 & 2; Bryan School SLO 1)

  • Students will implement the various steps of the critical thinking process, supported by the appropriate use of analytical and quantitative techniques, to formulate recommendations for subsequent decision making.

  • Apply appropriate ethical standards when making recommendations for business decision making.

  • Evaluate business decisions in the context of sustainability goals, balancing environmental, social, and economic needs, conditions, and potential decision impacts.

  • Formulate appropriate strategies, in the context of global issues and forces, to improve business performance in the world economy.

  • Explain the roles of innovation and innovation management in achieving successful business strategies, decisions, and performance.

  • Plan, schedule, contribute to, and lead projects.

  • Critically analyze claims, arguments, artifacts or information. In this course, student learning related to MAC Critical Thinking and Inquiry in the Social and Behavioral Sciences SLO 1 will be assessed primarily through biweekly in-class quizzes.

  • Construct coherent, evidence-based arguments. In this course, student learning related to MAC Critical Thinking and Inquiry in the Social and Behavioral Sciences SLO 2 will be assessed through Packback discussion posts and responses.

Attendance/Participation:

Daily attendance is recorded. Weighted 0 for absence and 100 for present. Students receive two free days, which replaces the two lowest scores.
