Performance Assessment in K-12 Dance Education

Course Description

A systematic analysis of assessment in K-12 dance pedagogy. Reliability, validity, and bias in the construction of classroom assignments and practice the cycle of planning, instructing, assessing for instruction in dance. Prerequisite: Graduate standing in Dance or permission of instructor.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Use standards-based assessment to systematically analyze formative, summative, and self-assessment strategies to monitor and improve instruction and to promote understanding and integration of edTPA (DPI Standard 1, Leadership; DPI Standard 3, Content and Curriculum Expertise)
  • Collaboratively develop corresponding rubrics for use in assessment of knowledge and skills for specific grade levels and dance content knowledge and assess primary effectiveness for edTPA (DPI Standard 4, Student Learning; DPI Standard 2, Respectful Educational Environment; DPI Standard 5, Reflection)
  • Design pre/post assessments, performance assessments, and criterion referenced assessments. Modify teaching practices based on assessment results and critically analyze their content for edTPA (DPI Standard 5, Reflection; DPI Standard 3, Content and Curriculum Expertise)
  • Planning and/or adapting curricula that are standards driven so students develop understanding and problem-solving expertise in the content area(s) using reading, written, physical expression and oral communication for edTPA (DPI Standard 4, Student Learning)
  • Explain the advantages and limitations of different kinds of assessments and assessment items for particular kinds of learning targets for edTPA (objective, performance-based, etc.) (DPI Standard 3, Content and Curriculum Expertise; DPI Standard 4, Student Learning)
  • Reflect on assessment results and promote student self-assessment using established criteria for edTPA (DPI Standard 3, Content and Curriculum Expertise; DPI Standard 5, Reflection)
