Dance Studies I: Theories and Methods

Course Description

Introduction to scholarship and research methodologies in dance studies. Students will be introduced to key theories and methodologies that have shaped the interdisciplinary field of dance research. Prerequisite: DCE 605 and admission to graduate degree program in dance.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Promptly learn and execute class exercises, movement phrases, and dance combinations.
  • Demonstrate integrated foot patterns, torso and upper-body sequences, and the nuances of the dances studied.
  • Demonstrate the relationship between musical accompaniment and movement.
  • Demonstrate refined initiation, articulation, and coordination of movement.
  • Demonstrate a deep exploration of movement qualities, dynamics, and energetic projection.

Attendance/Participation:

Regular attendance and active participation are expected. Attendance and participation together account for 20% of the final grade. Students are expected to engage fully in class activities and movement experiences.
