Field-based Teaching Experience - Secondary

Course Description

Methods of teaching dance with observation, participation, and planning/teaching/evaluating at secondary level. Development of competencies for teaching dance in secondary public school settings. Prerequisite: Permission of department; must have earned a grade of B or higher in DCE 212 before beginning high school placement; Must have completed DCE 457; Note: May be repeated once for a total of 6 s.h.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Select pedagogical concepts, age-appropriate teaching approaches, methods of inquiry, and structures of the discipline to create accessible and meaningful learning experiences for secondary students’ mastery of content.
  • Design, develop, and implement an NC standards-based dance-education curriculum and lessons for secondary student
  • Apply pedagogical theory and research-verified strategies to focus differentiated instruction while considering abilities, interests, learning environments, and cultural/linguistic factors.
  • Design and use multiple, authentic assessments, including summative and formative assessments for secondary-level dance curricula.
  • Work with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, encourage positive social interaction, and foster self-motivation and engagement.
  • Incorporate resources, technology, and teaching materials effectively in dance instruction to enhance secondary students’ learning experiences.
  • Demonstrate professional dispositions that positively impact secondary students’ learning and development through ongoing thoughtful pre-professional learning experiences.
