Course Description
An exploratory introduction to Laban Bartenieff Movement Analysis through movement integration through movement integration, observation, critical research, notation, and analysis. Students will apply principles explored to multiple purposes including choreography, movement coaching, style analysis, and dance education. Prerequisite: Dance Major or Minor or permission of the instructor; Note: May be repeated once for credit.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Collaborate with peers to discuss, critique, and reflect on dance practices while maintaining a climate of mutual respect and acceptance.
Interpret, notate, and document movement using Motif Notation and movement scores.
Demonstrate and embody Bartenieff Fundamentals and Patterns of Total Body Connectivity.
Identify, analyze, and apply Effort Qualities, Shape Qualities, Modes of Shape Change, and principles of Space and Space Harmony.
Understand, compare, and utilize the various branches of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) in physical, experiential, written, and creative projects.
Recognize and analyze the structural, functional, and expressive aspects of movement.
Observe and identify recurring movement patterns, personal movement preferences, and explore strategies for expanding new movement possibilities.
Create and critically analyze dance phrases that have personal significance and expressive depth.
Integrate cooperative learning techniques to promote understanding and application of LMA in research, teaching, performance, and creative work.
Summarize and explain the basic history and contributions of Rudolf Laban, Irmgard Bartenieff, and Ann Hutchinson Guest to the field of dance.
