• Critically analyze claims, arguments, artifacts or information: To achieve this goal you will view and write about dance works, applying interpretive lenses and methods of analysis provided by leading historical and contemporary theorists in the field of dance studies. Additional writing assignments will involve assessing the clarity and usefulness of the analytical tools offered by the latter theorists.

• Construct coherent, evidence-based arguments: To achieve this goal you will study and write about dance-critical methods and identify specific components of dance critical writings. You will also view dance works and construct/defend personal critical responses to them that include clear descriptions, analyses, interpretations, and judgments of the works seen.

Course-Specific Learning Outcomes

• Use dance as a method of inquiry to make connections between dance, culture, gender, race, and national identities.

• Reflect on ways labels, categories, and hierarchies such as “art,” “world,” “ethnic,” are used in relation to dance.

• Describe and analyze dance through writing.

• Reflect on the experience of dancing.

• Interact as an active member of an online community.
