Jazz Dance I

Course Description

Introduction to the style, technique, and rhythmic structures of jazz dance with emphasis on increasing movement capabilities and personal expression. Notes: May be repeated for credit.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Experiencing intermediate jazz dance technique and theory.
  • Understanding personal movement style.
  • Developing proper body alignment, muscular strength, flexibility, coordination, and rhythmic awareness.
  • Understanding the history and evolution of jazz dance.
  • Observing and discussing dance as artistic expression and communication.
  • Using appropriate dance vocabulary to describe movement and support analysis.
  • Understanding jazz and popular music fundamentals.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and full participation are expected. Students are allowed two excused absences. After two absences, the course grade is lowered by one-third of a letter grade. More than five absences results in course failure. The School of Dance requires an 80% participation rate to receive credit for the course.
