Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is required for this course, as consistency in participation is essential for growth and development of any dance practice. Students are allowed two (2) unexcused absences for the duration of the semester. An additional two (2) classes can be made up via extra credit as needed.

The School of Dance requires an 80% participation rate to pass the course. Sitting and watching a class does not count as participation.

Students who do not meet the participation requirement for any reason may need to repeat the course and can be dropped from performances and/or productions.

When injured or ill (but not contagious), students may still be counted as present if they attend class and are able to accommodate some form of movement activity (to be prescribed by the instructor).

Dancers may request one (1) excused absence from dance technique or academic classes to visit the Dance Medicine Specialist. All other visits must be made/scheduled outside of dance technique and academic course times.

A 5-minute grace period will be offered to students in-case of running late due to parking, walking from another class, traffic, etc. Students who arrive more than 5 minutes after class has begun should not come directly into the class but should wait for the instructor to indicate when to enter and will be expected to either observe or make up the class with an additional assignment.

Maintaining good health through proper nutrition, sleep, and cross-training can help reduce injuries. However, if you do get injured, here are some guidelines:

You are allowed one excused absence per dance technique course to visit the Dance Medicine Specialist. Any additional visits or outside doctor appointments must be scheduled outside of class time.

If you suffer a serious injury before the "8-week Withdrawal without GPA penalty date" that prevents you from participating fully in classes for more than a week, you are advised to withdraw from the dance technique courses.

In case of emergencies, additional absences may be excused with proper documentation. Students are encouraged to communicate proactively if they foresee attendance issues or communicate with faculty quickly via email.

Active participation is required for this class. Active participation in this class means: being attentive to the instructor and peers through shared information, notes, and feedback; asking questions and proactively communicating ideas openly and honestly; proactive physical investigation in class and demonstrating unmistakable evidence of private practice; and supporting and encouraging peers.
