Course Description

Introduction to the movement techniques of contemporary dance, with emphasis on aesthetic and expressive qualities. Notes: May be repeated for credit.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Improvise and perform contemporary dance combinations with confidence, commitment, and artistry while honoring their body's unique anatomical needs and capabilities.

  • Identify various anatomical regions on the human body as they apply to contemporary dance techniques.

  • Demonstrate growing proficiency in contemporary dance technique, including movement efficiency, expressivity, musicality, range of motion, strength, flexibility, inversion, and transitions in and out of the floor.

  • Articulate through physical and verbal expression a clear understanding of key concepts in Bartenieff Fundamentals, including topics such as Body Organization, Dynamic Alignment, Connectivity, Breath Support, Core Support, Rotary Factor, Effort Intent, and Spatial Intent.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and full participation are expected at each class meeting.

The UNCG School of Dance requires an 80% participation rate to receive credit for the course. Students are allowed two excused absences, after which their grade will be lowered by 1/3 of a letter grade. Students who accrue more than five absences will automatically fail the course.

Attendance will be taken at the start of every class. Being late is equal to one-half absence. "Late" is defined as arriving more than five minutes after the start of class. After ten minutes, students may not take class and will be counted absent. Sitting and watching class does not count as participation.
