Dance First-Year Foundations

Course Description

Dance First-Year Foundations will provide Dance Majors with the skills to help them transition to and navigate the university academic experience. With an emphasis on connecting to peers, faculty and curriculum in the School of Dance, students will also develop introductory dance composition, qualitative research writing and critical thinking skills. Prerequisite: Dance Major or Minor or permission of instructor. Must have fewer than 60 credits to enroll or can enroll by Written Permission

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Develop academic skills and demonstrate the ability to identify and use campus services and resources (e.g. Library, Writing Center, Speaking Center).
  • Develop goals and plans related to personal purpose, interests, or values between self and community.
  • Build connections between self and community, peers, faculty, and staff. (e.g., UNCG, college/student/department, special interest group, social/leadership/service initiative).
  • Critically evaluate information and media sources in a variety of formats.
  • Incorporate and cite sources accurately and correctly

Student performance is assessed through studio projects, process work, critique participation, and written reflection. Major assignments are weighted as follows: Module 1: Connecting to University + CVPA Resources – Foundations MAC SLO #1 and SLO #5 Module 2: Connecting to the School of Dance Community – Foundations MAC SLO #2 Module 3: Research, Choreography, and Performance – Foundations MAC SLO #3, SLO #4, and SLO #5
