Introduction to Dance

Course Description

Studies of different dance styles through readings, dance studio experiences, discussions, and concert attendance. Notes: For non-majors.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Recognize various styles of dance, their identifying components, and the cultural backgrounds from which they were created. Relates to SLO 1, 2, and 3.
  • Develop proficiencies and skills specific to the practice and implementation of selected dance styles. Relates to SLO 1 and 2.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the history and cultural significance of dance practices or styles through oral and written observations. Relates to SLO 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  • Apply course concepts through movement practice, creative exploration, and collaborative learning. Relates to SLO 1, 3, and 4.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and full participation are expected at each class meeting.

The UNCG School of Dance requires 80% participation rate to get credit for the course. Students are allowed Two “excused” absences, after which their grade will be lowered by 1/3 of a letter grade. Students who accrue more than five absences will automatically fail this course. Excused absences will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Attendance will be taken at the start of every class. Being late for class is equal to half (1/2) of an absence. “Late” is defined as arriving more than five (5) minutes after the start of class time. After ten (10) minutes, students may not take class and will be counted absent. In exceptional circumstances, students may leave class early or arrive late with permission of instructor.

Sitting and watching a class does not count as participation. Students who do not meet the participation requirement or any reason may need to repeat the course. All excused absences are at the discretion of the instructor based on university/departmental policies.
