Course Description
Drawing from multiple theoretical perspectives, this course explores theories, research, and issues important to the understanding of communication between people from different racial, ethnic, national, and other cultural backgrounds.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Examine culture, self, and communication to create a deeper relationship with one another in a multicultural society.
- Describe the historical contexts of intercultural encounters and relations.
- Examine privileges in the contexts of race, class, gender, sexuality, etc. as an ethical response to societal injustice and inequality.
- Articulate your ideas coherently, clearly, and thoughtfully in interpersonal, group, and public contexts to culturally diverse audiences.

The midterm grade period occurs each semester between the fifth and sixth week of classes. During this time, a midterm grade will be assigned based on assignments to date. If you have a D or an F at midterm, it is recommended to discuss strategies and options for continuing in the class.

Attendance/Participation:
Regular class attendance is a responsibility and a privilege of university education. Students are expected to be physically present, mentally available, and actively participate in class.
You can receive 2 points per day for full attendance: come on time, be respectful, and pay thoughtful attention until class ends. Partial attendance earns 1 point. Excused absences (university-sanctioned events, sudden illness, documented emergencies) incur no point penalty. Unexcused absences earn 0 points.
Whether excused or unexcused, students are responsible for submitting assignments on time and keeping up with missed information.
