Language Learning Disabilities

Course Description

Assessment and treatment of spoken and written language learning disabilities in school-age children and adolescents with special emphasis on the collaborative role of the speech-language pathologist in school-based settings. Prerequisite: Students enrolled in the M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology program or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of language, reading, writing, and spelling development during the school age years.

  • Identify and recognize a variety of tools and measures used to assess the language, reading, spelling, and writing of K-12 students.

  • Correctly interpret and explain assessment information for differential diagnosis, that describes the strengths and weaknesses of students with reading or writing difficulties.

  • Identify and apply procedures to improve language, phonological awareness, reading, and spelling abilities.

  • Develop goals and recommendations that consider curriculum standards and benchmarks for K-12 grade level students.
