Introduction to Adult Language Disorders

Course Description

Assessment, treatment, and quality of life issues associated with acquired cognitive-linguistic disorders in adults will be addressed. The targeted disorders include aphasia, dementia, and traumatic brain injury.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Understand neuroanatomical structures that support language and cognition.

  • Demonstrate the use of vocabulary related to acquired cognitive linguistic disorders and the neural etiology associated with specific disorders

  • List the major cognitive domains.

  • Identify five common characteristics of 1) aphasia, and cognitive communicative disorders associated with 2) Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and 3) dementias.

  • Know three ways to support communication in people with aphasia and cognitive communicative disorders due to TBI and dementias.

  • Recognize the quality of life issues associated with aphasia and cognitive communication disorders and their impact of socialization and community involvement.

  • Understand person-centered care as it relates to acquired language and cognitive communication disorders.
