Diagnostic Procedures: Inquiry, Observation and Measurement

Course Description

Processes and techniques of data acquisition and analysis for the diagnosis, assessment, and evaluation of communication disorders. Prerequisite: Completion of all CSD 300-level courses required for the major or permission of the instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify, define, and apply psychometric principle terms as knowledge of these terms is necessary for critical analysis and selection of assessments

  • Identify, define, and apply foundational assessment terms (ex. Basal, ceilings, raw score, etc.) as these terms are necessary for accurate administration and interpretation of standardized tests

  • Calculate chronological age

  • Identify and explain common assessment methods

  • Identify, explain, and demonstrate the ability to administer selected assessment tasks/assessments

  • Discuss the process of obtaining case history information necessary for diagnosis of a variety of communication impairments

  • Demonstrate the ability to score a selected assessment instrument and interpret findings

  • Integrate and apply course concepts to clinical situations to demonstrate understanding of administering assessments
