Doctoral Student Orientation

Course Description

Introduction to computer science research and standards in different areas of computer science. Particular emphasis on research in the department with faculty-presented research presentations. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Understand the expectations, milestones, and degree requirements of a Ph.D. program.
  • Identify research directions and develop research topics through effective literature exploration and critical evaluation of research papers.
  • Develop foundational skills in academic reading, writing, and oral presentation for communicating research effectively.
  • Understand the academic publication process, including peer review, rebuttal, conference presentations, and scholarly communication.
  • Recognize the roles and responsibilities of advisors and doctoral students and develop effective research communication and collaboration skills.
  • Explore academic and industry career pathways and develop a professional perspective on conducting and disseminating research.
