Professional Development: Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Industries

Course Description

Guidance and preparation for relevant and successful internship experiences in the major. Emphasis on professional norms and behavior. Examination of processes, content, requirements, and options for self-directed learning opportunities. Prerequisite: Overall minimum GPA of 2.20 required for all concentrations; Minimum grade of C (2.0) in APD 252 for Apparel Design concentration; Minimum grade of C (2.0) in RCS 361 for RCS and RMT concentrations.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Develop an awareness of the scope of jobs available within the field of consumer, apparel, and retail industries.
  • Identify and communicate ideas in written, oral and visual forms using appropriate technology.
  • Enhance teamwork and presentation skills.
  • Critically evaluate and successfully “market” oneself through various strategies.
  • Develop skills and strategies for career planning in the consumer, apparel, and retail industry.
  • Develop a professional approach for work in the consumer, apparel, and retail industry.
  • Understand business etiquette and practices.
  • Understand corporate mission statements, social responsibility, organizational structures, and management styles.
  • Learn time, money, and stress management techniques.
  • Understand career options through contact with industry professionals.

Attendance/Participation:

While this is a virtual asynchronous course and no “live” attendance is required, you are expected to spend the same amount of time on this class that you would if you were in a live course. As such, expect to spend at least 2 ½ to 3 hours each week to complete your coursework to be successful.

UNCG allows for a limited number of excused absences each academic year for religious observances required by the faith of the student. Students must notify the instructor of absences in advance of the date of the religious observance. Students are responsible for making up any work that is missed. Written confirmation may be required.

Students who expect to miss one or more class meetings due to participation in university-sponsored activities should notify the instructor(s) at least five class days in advance; arrange to complete all missed work in advance of the absence whenever practicable; present relevant documentation of participation upon request.

Students who expect to miss more than three class periods of any single course or more than two consecutive meetings of a laboratory course for university-sponsored activities should inform the instructor at the beginning of the course. If reasonable accommodations cannot be made, the student may be advised to drop the course.
