Inorganic Chemistry I

Course Description

Introduction to theoretical principles, structure, and reactivity of main group metals and nonmetals and transition metals including industrial, bioinorganic and organometallic chemistry, and inorganic materials and nanomaterials. Prerequisite: CHE 114.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Apply the quantum mechanical description of electrons in atoms and molecules to evaluate the energy and position of electrons in the system.
  • Predict the structure and bonding in molecules.
  • Apply symmetry principles to interpret structural and spectroscopic characteristics of molecules.
  • Define the structural characteristics and properties of solids.
  • Identify the acid-base characteristics of inorganic substances.
  • Describe the structural and bonding characteristics of metal coordination complexes.
  • Use crystal field theory and molecular orbital theory to explain magnetic and spectroscopic characteristics of transition metal coordination complexes.

Attendance/Participation:

ICPs are used in place of attendance for this course. These are turned in at the end of each class and are graded for completeness only. Each is worth 5 points and collectively make up 15% of the students overall grade.
