Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Learn and practice safety standards in a chemical laboratory environment

  • Develop skills in handling scientific equipment and making measurements

  • Apply recordkeeping and reporting methods that reflect the integrity and ethics associated with scientific data and information

  • Apply scientific inquiry to develop knowledge of chemical systems

  • Classify substances based on their physical and chemical properties

  • Synthesize and characterize a chemical compound

  • Perform calculations describing mass and energy changes during chemical reactions

  • Use scientific instruments to make quantitative measurements of the properties of samples

  • Perform writing exercises to become familiar with scientific writing.

Students will have one week to complete their report sheet for any given experiment. Report sheets will be completed in Labflow. If a report sheet is not submitted during this time, a grade of zero will be recorded.

Late reports will be accepted, however ALL late reports will be assessed a 10% penalty if turned in prior to the cutoff date (two days past due date). It is at the discretion of the instructor if they wish to stack a 10% penalty on top of the existing penalty if you require a report to be reopened. Instructors have the right to refuse to open reports that are two weeks past due. Those reports will be given a grade of a 0.

There will be a quiz every week. The quiz will cover the procedure and safety components of the experiment that will be done that week. It is due before the beginning of pre-lab. There will be no extensions on these quizzes. If they are not completed by their due date and time, a grade of a zero will be given.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is required at all scheduled lab meetings. Excused absences are granted when a doctor’s note supporting illness or injury or documentation of a death in the immediate family is provided. If there is some other reason for an absence, contact your instructor as soon as possible.

A combination of 3 or more absences or missing reports constitutes unsatisfactory performance in the lab course. Under such circumstances, students will:

  • Fail the course if the situations are unexcused

  • Receive an Incomplete for the course if the situations are excused [personal illness (must have a note from a physician) or a death in the immediate family (provide obituary or funeral program)].

MAKE UP LAB:

There will be no make up labs!!!!!! If you miss a lab, please look at the class schedule on the home page of Canvas to find a class you can take for that week. Once you identify a class, email the instructor of both your class and the class you wish to take to make sure it is acceptable. We have a max capacity of 24 so if the lab is full, you will not be granted permission to take the lab.

  • Dry data or Virtual labs may be given if a student has circumstances that require an extended period of absence from lab. It should be noted that the use of virtual/dry data doesn’t take away the absence. No labs (even virtual) will be made up after two weeks.
