General Chemistry I

Course Description

Fundamental principles of chemistry, including stoichiometry, atomic structure, and states of matter. Prerequisite: One year of high school chemistry or CHE 103; students lacking high school chemistry should take the sequence CHE 103, CHE 111, CHE 114; Prerequisite or Corequisite: CHE 112.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Apply scientific inquiry to develop knowledge of chemical systems
  • Demonstrate understanding of the composition of matter, the structure of the atom, bonding in molecules, heat transfer in chemical reactions, properties of gases, intermolecular forces and their application to broader issues such as global warming, pharmaceutical action, engine operation, energy resources and production of microelectronics
  • Apply chemistry and understand its influence on society and the importance of chemistry in everyday life

Course Grading Information:

Activity/Performance Measure Percentage/Points
Unit Tests (1-6) 50%
Final Exam 15%
Unit Homework Assignments 15%
Pie Progress Assignment 10%
Attendance 10%

The final exam consists of two parts: the ACS First Term General Chemistry Exam (approximately 70 questions, 25% of the final exam grade) and a cumulative portion from the text (approximately 30-40 questions, 75% of the final exam grade).

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance will be recorded during each lecture meeting. Your attendance grade will be calculated as a percentage of the number of lectures attended out of the number of lectures held. An attendance sheet will be posted at the beginning of every class, it is the student’s responsibility to sign the sheet before leaving. If you forget to sign the attendance sheet you will be marked as absent. Anyone caught signing in for another student will receive an attendance grade of 0% for the full semester. Anyone more than 10 minutes late or who leaves more than 20 minutes early will be recorded as absent. Two absences will be dropped from your attendance record at the end of the semester. Anyone attending every lecture will receive over 100% for their attendance grade.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

Chemistry Atoms First by Julia Burdge 5th edition ISBN: 9781266257483 with ALEKS 360 Access Card (ALEKS 360 will provide access to the eText) and a scientific calculator.
