Course Description
Research methods in counseling; clinical assessment tools and issues; contemporary issues and trends in counselor education, including professional and ethical issues and global perspectives. Prerequisite: Admitted to the doctoral program in counselor education.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Students will learn the professional leadership roles of a counselor educator, including those related to teaching, clinical supervision, research/scholarship, and professional advocacy, service, leadership, and mentoring. CACREP Standards A.2.f; B.3.i, j, m; B.5.b, c, d.
- Students will be introduced to the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities of doctoral-level counselors, particularly counselor educators, including issues related to students (e.g., recruiting a diverse student body, student review and retention), research and publication (e.g., informed consent, authorship order), and leadership and advocacy. CACREP Standards B.3.i, j, k; B.4.l; B.5.d
- Students will be introduced to current issues in counselor education. CACREP Standard A.2.g
- Students will learn basic knowledge and practice basic skills of academic writing for peer-reviewed journal publication. CACREP Standard A.2.a, c; B.4.h
- Based on activities conducted as part of the course, students will develop a professional plan that includes experiences designed to
- enhance their counseling skills and develop an area of clinical expertise;
- develop or enhance skills in teaching, clinical supervision, and leadership/advocacy;
- develop research competencies, professional writing skills, learn the publication process, and identify potential pre-graduation writing projects;
- identify a potential area(s) for a research agenda and learn how such an agenda is developed;
- consider participation in professional counseling organizations as well as involvement in professional advocacy efforts;
- consider how they envision the various roles of a PhD may fit into their professional career plans;
- plan for their own self-care throughout the doctoral program; and

- Students will learn the Departmental, Graduate School, and University procedures, timelines, tasks, etc., relevant to their progress and success in the doctoral program. CACREP Standards A.5
