Advanced Teaching Seminar in Counselor Education

Course Description

Focus on techniques and skills. Designed to provide instruction, support, and consultation for doctoral teaching assistants. Consultation and teaching are provided through scheduled presentations and discussions, instructor and/or peer observation of teaching, and individual meetings as needed. Prerequisite: CED 757; Admission to the Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education program or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Continue to develop effective teaching theory, teaching skills, classroom management, and philosophy of teaching appropriate for university instruction.
  • Continue to develop working knowledge of campus resources and policies relevant to teaching undergraduate students
  • Develop fair and consistent approach to evaluation that is consistent with teaching style and philosophy.
  • Demonstrate ability to evaluate one’s own progress and development as a teacher.
  • Provision of consultation to doctoral students in their teaching internship, serving as a consultant and/or mentor as needed throughout the semester
  • Learn how to conduct teaching observations of peers who are also teaching courses.

Attendance/Participation:

Actively contribute to development and implementation of course and classroom activities (discussions, presentations, etc.). Since this is a doctoral class, we share responsibility for the learning experiences that take place through the course. Therefore, your attendance and active participation in the class is critical, not only for your own learning and that of your peers, but also to the overall success of the course. Attendance and participation will be important factors in evaluating your performance in the course.
