Evidence-Based Practice in Counseling

Course Description

Overview of specific evidence-based practice interventions, methods, and approaches in counseling. The focus will depend on the course topic, but will focus on topics such as trauma-informed counseling/TF-CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Emotion-focused Therapy, etc. Corequisite: CED 653.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Understand the effects of historical events, multigenerational trauma, and current issues on diverse cultural groups in the U.S. and globally [CACREP standards 3B3].
  • Analyze the effects of crises, disasters, stress, grief, and trauma across the lifespan [CACREP standards 3C13].
  • Demonstrate suicide prevention and response models and strategies [CACREP standards 3E19].
  • Identify crisis intervention, trauma-informed, community-based, and disaster mental health strategies [CACREP standards 3E20].

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance and participation are required components of this course and are essential to your professional development. Students may miss up to two class sessions without penalty. Each additional absence may result in a 10% reduction of the final course grade.

Missing more than 15 minutes of class time—including arriving late, leaving early, or being absent during part of class—counts as one tardy; two tardies equal one absence. Missing more than 45 minutes of class time counts as an absence.

Please notify the instructor by email before class if you will be absent or within 24 hours of an unexpected absence. Students are required to successfully complete the associated practicum.
