Advanced Clinical Topics in Couple and Family Counseling/Therapy

Course Description

Advanced seminar in the scientific and cultural foundations for practice of couple and family counseling/therapy. Prerequisite: CED 690 or permission of instructor; Corequisite: CED 653; Notes: May be repeated for credit when topic varies. Must be completed successfully before post-master's certificate student can enroll in internship.

  • Assess impact of interpersonal violence on marriages, couples, and families [CACREP standard 5.F.3]

  • Attend to interactions of career, life, and gender roles in marriages, couples, and families [CACREP standard 5.F.4]

  • Explore the impact of unemployment, under-employment, and changes in socioeconomic standing on marriages, couples, and families [CACREP standard 5.F.5]

  • Explore the impact of migration on family functioning [CACREP standard 5.F.6]

  • Apply theories and models of marriage, couple, and family counseling [CACREP standard 5.F.7]

  • Apply principles and models of assessment and case conceptualization from a systems perspective [CACREP standard 5.F.8]

  • Apply techniques and interventions of marriage, couple, and family counseling [CACREP standard 5.F.10]

  • Conceptualize and implement treatment, planning, and intervention strategies in marriage, couple, and family counseling [CACREP standard 5.F.11]

  • Evaluate service delivery modalities and networks within the continuum of care, such as primary care, outpatient, partial treatment, inpatient, integrated behavioral healthcare, and aftercare [CACREP standard 5.F.12]

  • Evaluate strategies for interfacing with the legal system relevant to marriage, couple, and family counseling [CACREP standard 5.F.13]

  • Evaluate third-party reimbursement and other practice and management issues in marriage, couple, and family counseling [CACREP standard 5.F.14]
