Foundations of Mental Health Counseling

Course Description

Theoretical and applied information for counselors working in clinical mental health counseling settings. Explores delivery systems, procedures, and techniques related to counseling individuals, groups, couples, and families in these settings. Prerequisite: CED 610, counseling major.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Understand legislation, government policy, and regulatory processes relevant to clinical mental health counseling [CACREP standards 5C3].

  • Consider strategies for interfacing with the legal system regarding court-referred clients [CACREP standards 5C6].

  • Consider strategies for interfacing with integrated behavioral healthcare professionals [CACREP standards 5C7].

  • Understand third-party reimbursement and other practice and management issues in clinical mental health counseling [CACREP standards 5C9].
