Organizational Leadership

Course Description

The course examines the theories and models of leadership. Environmental pressures, organizational objectives, company culture, and individual ethical standards will be examined to incorporate the situational determinants of leadership effectiveness. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing.

Syllabus

COURSE GOALS:

This course will provide a framework on what leadership entails, along with developing an understanding of the skills and knowledge of how best to address leadership opportunities now and in the future. Students’ ability to understand and apply diverse approaches to the leadership in organizations is emphasized by readings, lectures, and case analyses of pertinent management materials. The emphasis is on building a sound grasp of good practice and on developing the ability to apply such knowledge to actual business problems.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Define leadership and the role of genetics development on individual leadership capability

  • Be able to identify popular distinctions in the differences between leaders and managers.

  • Assess the state of current leadership capacity within organizations and suggest how leadership needs analysis can support and enhance organizational effectiveness.

  • Demonstrate leadership skills through participation in experiential exercises.

  • Assess personal values, beliefs, and ethical standards to enhance self-awareness regarding personal leadership behaviors and reactions to leadership behaviors of others.

  • Identify how leading a team is different from leading a group of individuals.

  • Identify special challenges involved in leading geographical dispersed (virtual) teams.

  • Describe the role of culture in determining effective leadership perceptions and outcomes.

  • Understand leadership at the personal, interpersonal, team, and organizational levels and the array of leader-follower-situation variables that influence the leadership process.

Attendance/Participation:

Because this is an asynchronous course, there is no traditional attendance requirement. Students are expected to participate by completing all assignments, discussions, reflections, and other required course activities by the stated deadlines. Due dates are listed in the Course Overview document and on Canvas. Students are responsible for meeting these deadlines. The instructor reserves the right to modify course schedules or deadlines at their discretion, and any changes will be communicated through Canvas. Participation and timely completion of course requirements will be reflected in each student’s final course grade.
