Course Description

Development of critical-thinking and writing skills through discussions and critiques of primary literature in environmental health science and through writing assignments. Prerequisite: Biology graduate student or permission of instructor.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate the primary literature in a particular area of the life sciences
  • Synthesize the state of knowledge in a particular area of the life sciences
  • Formulate scientific hypothesis, derive predictions, and propose tests of these predictions
  • Read, understand, and follow grant writing guidelines (NSF or NIH)
  • Develop an original, complete grant application
  • Productively critique and evaluate grant applications

Attendance/Participation:

Class attendance is expected. Assigned seats will be established on the first day of class for in-person classes which will be used as a means for attendance, and roll call will occur for zoom meetings. Notify the instructors of any emergency or scheduled excused absence as soon as possible.
