Chemical properties of major cellular compounds; biosynthesis, degradation, and function of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, vitamins, and hormones; energy metabolism; enzymatic catalysis. Prerequisite: BIO 355 and BIO 392; or permission of instructor

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Explain how nutrients are digested, absorbed, and transported across membranes and in the blood.
Describe how hormones transmit signals to regulate metabolic pathways.
Describe the pathways and the critical regulatory points for the metabolism of nutrients.
Integrate the metabolic interconversions of lipids, carbohydrates and amino acids.
Explain how metabolic pathways are regulated during different physiological conditions.
Describe how DNA and RNA metabolism and how nutrients alter gene expression.
Apply concepts about metabolic pathways and their regulation to novel situations

THERE ARE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WITHOUT DR. PATEL'S PERMISSION. There is NO extra credit for the course. There is no grade negotiating. All grading issues must be presented within one week of the returned material. The instructor reserves the right to regrade the whole test/quiz/homework, not just one aspect. Late assignments are not accepted. Answers on all assignments, quizzes and tests must be from information from this class only and must be stated in the first sentence (no run-on sentences).
Attendance/Participation:
Attendance/participation is not a graded component included in the student's final grade for this course.
