Course Description

Laboratory and online course that integrates modern genetic, cellular, and molecular techniques and methods to understand the concept of the gene to phenotype in biology and human health. Prerequisite: Either BIO 355 or BIO 392; Corequisite: If not completed as a prerequisite, either BIO 355 or BIO 392

  1. Describe gene structure and summarize the processes of transcription, RNA processing, and translation.

  2. Explain the connection between genotype and phenotype on the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels.

  3. Develop hypotheses to answer specific research questions.

  4. Explain the use and applications of specific cell/molecular laboratory techniques.

  5. Generate, analyze, and interpret primary research data.

  6. Apply basic statistical methods to data analysis and interpretation.

  7. Communicate research findings in a standard, scientific written report.

  8. Design and present a journal club to critical analyze a specific research paper.

  9. Develop laboratory skills that ensure accuracy and reproducibility.

Attendance/Participation:

Course attendance is mandatory. In order to benefit from a lab course, you must be there to perform the experiments. In the evident that you have an emergency and cannot attend your section, you must make every attempt to attend another section.

If you miss two sections without making up that same week, your grade will be dropped by one letter grade. If you miss more than three sections without making up that same week, you will be dropped from the course.

Your attendance is evaluated in three ways:

Proper lab attire (close toed shoes, pants that cover your legs to your socks)

Having your physical lab manual and composition notebook.
