Course Description
Study of cellular organization and function. Fundamental biochemical properties, including cellular components, enzyme function, energetics, and metabolism studied in relation to cellular structure, membrane function, cell movement, and cytoplasmic compartments. Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C- in BIO 111, BIO 111L, BIO 112, and BIO 112L; CHE 114 (or equivalent); Note: May not be taken more than twice.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
Gain knowledge of fundamental biochemical properties, including: cellular components, enzyme function, energetics, and metabolism studied in relation to cellular structure, membrane function, cell movement, and cytoplasmic compartments.
Know how modern experiments reveal the organization and function of cells.
Connect core concepts in cell biology to applications in medicine and biotechnology while learning how biologists interpret real experimental data.

There will be no curve in this course. However, you have the opportunity to add up to 5 points to each exam grade by answering a question about your Pet Protein on each Exam.
Attendance/Participation:
You are expected to attend this class in person. Your grade will be based on your participation in the course via in-class quizzes and exam material will come directly from lecture content. I will not record lectures other than the asynchronous lectures noted on the syllabus. Slides will be posted to Canvas immediately before class time. You can attend office hours to go over missed material or schedule makeup time with me for up to 3 excused absences. An excused absence is a sick day/family emergency with doctor’s note or >72 hours notice of missed class for sanctioned university event (sports, academic UNCG event). There will be no other excused absences. You may not reschedule an exam for a time after the exam date unless you have a documented medical/family emergency. Make-up exams will be conducted the day BEFORE the in-class exam and requires >72 hours notice of UNCG sanctioned activity to schedule.
