Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Characterize bacterial and viral types by physical characteristics, biochemical characteristics, growth characteristics, virulence factors and diseases caused.
- Understand the principles of basic immunology and differentiate between the responses of the cell-mediated and humoral systems of the body to pathogen invasion.
- Apply the principles of epidemiology to novel situations and diseases to both predict and propose solutions for epidemic, pandemic, or endemic infectious diseases of man.
Course Grading Information:
| Activity/Performance Measure | Percentage/Points |
|---|---|
| Four lecture tests and the final exam (final is cumulative and counts as two tests) | 80% |
| Class participation group activities | 10% |
| Mastering Microbiology online homework assignments | 9.75% |
| Introduction and syllabus quiz in Canvas | 0.25% |
Makeup lecture tests, allowed only with valid excuse (documented illness or death in immediate family), will be essay format.
*Plus and minus grades are possible only for those within 2 points of the letter grade border, and will be determined by the class participation grade AND attendance. Attendance in lecture is strongly encouraged, as questions and answers during class can greatly enhance your learning. Attendance through iClicker login will also be used for part of your grade determination (plus and minus policy described above).
If you miss a lecture session, it is your responsibility to watch the recording of the lecture and take notes from it.
Class participation group activities require you to be a responsible and attentive group member. A group leader should be designated to organize communications and upload the group’s final response to the challenge assigned, but every group member must contribute to this group activity to receive credit, as the group leader will indicate on their submission which members did not participate.
