Course Description
Advanced course in ceramics with emphasis on the entire ceramic process: preparation of clay body and glazes, forming, bisque and glaze firing. Prerequisite: ART 281 and ART 381; Notes: May be repeated three times for a total of 12 semester hours.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
In this course students will focus on the process of slip casting. Students will also build upon skills developed in previous ceramic and sculpture courses. Students are encouraged to use a combination of building techniques with the slip casting process including hand built and wheel thrown forms. Discipline, self-motivation, research, and experimentation will be necessary in order to complete this course successfully. Assignments are designed to challenge your perception of the ceramic process, encourage exploration, and develop your own personal direction.
Students will develop skills such as mold making, slip formulation, glaze calculation, and kiln firing. Independent kiln firing will take place during this course. Student will learn how to fire electric kilns and will begin to participate in firing the large outdoor gas kilns. Students will continue to further their research and concepts pertaining to their work.
All assignments must be completed by the required due date. A sketchbook is required containing drawings, ideas, research, and all-important information pertaining to the course. Students must attend and participate in every critique. Critiques are the equivalent to an exam in an academic course. Participation in class activities such as clay mixing, kiln firing, and most of all cleanup is also required.

Attendance/Participation:
Students are required to be in class during class hours. Students can miss three classes before their grade drops a letter.

pottery tool kit (contains a variety of basic tools) rubber rib, fettling knife, cheap one inch paintbrush, small container with lid, trash bags, metal fork, small bucket, large sponge, dust masks (3pack), and a sure form tool, spray bottle, soft bedding foam, flat Rubbermaid containers, 2 buckets, calculator, murphy’s oil soap, putty knife.
