Course Description
Introduction to basic concepts and techniques of three-dimensional modeling within a digital environment. Prerequisite: ART 240.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Navigate Maya, establish project files, and use core polygon modeling tools with confidence.
- Translate visual reference into proportionally accurate hard-surface, organic, container, and cloth-based forms.
- Apply clean topology, purposeful edge flow, bevels, and organized scene structure appropriate for an introductory production pipeline.
- Create usable UV layouts and introductory PBR textures for a multi-object still life scene.
- Assemble, light, render, and present a cohesive still life project using professional file naming, versioning, and critique practices.
- Explain modeling decisions and respond constructively to peer and instructor feedback.

Passing Requirements
Complete at least six of the seven milestone assignments.
Complete the Maya Terminology Test.
Participate in Discussions 1 and 2 and complete the required article review activity.
Complete all three final project items: Assignments 8, 9, and 10.
Failure to complete all three final project items may result in a failing course grade regardless of performance in other categories. Speak with the instructor early if circumstances are affecting your ability to complete the final package.

Attendance/Participation:
Attendance is essential because demonstrations, critiques, and guided studio work cannot be fully recreated through written directions. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class.
Four unexcused absences are permitted.
Three late arrivals or early departures equal one absence.
Six unexcused absences will result in a failing grade for the course.
Critique days require attendance and participation, even when a project is incomplete.
Student-athletes and students with university-related conflicts must communicate known conflicts in advance.
Course Materials Purchased by the Students:
- Access to the Gatewood lab or a computer capable of running the required software.
- A three-button mouse.
- An external SSD, 500 GB or larger recommended.
- A second backup location such as OneDrive, Google Drive, or another approved cloud service.
- A drawing glove when using a Cintiq display.
