Course Description

Wheel-thrown forms; glazing and decorating techniques. Prerequisite: ART 281 or permission of instructor

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Acquire basic throwing skills
  • Explore a variety of glazes and firing processes
  • Participate in the firing and loading of gas and electric kilns
  • To develop a better understanding of the concepts of form and function
  • Learn the entire ceramic process from mixing their own clay, building three dimensionally, firing kilns, and finally developing glazes through the glaze calculation process
  • Develop a greater understanding of ceramics by researching both historical and contemporary issues of ceramics
  • Generate and develop their own ideas, learn to think critically about their work, and most of all experiment

Attendance/Participation:

This course requires students to be in person during class hours. Student can miss 3 classes before their grade drops a letter.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

pottery tool kit (contains a variety of basic tools) rubber rib, fettling knife, cheap one inch paintbrush, small container with lid, trash bags, metal fork, small bucket, large sponge, dust masks (3pack), and a sure form tool.
