Course Description

Studio based study of photo-based imagery and digital imaging. In-depth study of Photoshop and complementary photo-based software. Prerequisite: ART 140; ART 240 or ART 241; or permission of instructor.

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

Technical

  • Use Photoshop to create sophisticated digital composites.
  • Use Lightroom to develop and color-correct photographic images.
  • Apply non-destructive editing workflows.
  • Use masks, adjustment layers, blending modes, selections, channels, and layer organization effectively.
  • Manipulate color relationships using professional color-correction and grading techniques.
  • Construct realistic lighting within digitally composited environments.
  • Prepare digital images for print and screen.

Conceptual

  • Use color intentionally to communicate mood, emotion, and narrative.
  • Analyze the relationship between light, color, composition, and visual meaning.
  • Construct images that communicate an idea rather than simply displaying technical skill.
  • Develop visual narratives through photographic and digital imagery.
  • Make intentional decisions about typography and image hierarchy.

Professional

  • Develop a consistent digital workflow.
  • Organize and archive digital assets professionally.
  • Present finished work at a professional level.
  • Critique and discuss digital imagery using appropriate visual vocabulary.
  • Develop a cohesive body of work.

Attendance/Participation:

Students are to be in class ready for work; 6 unjustified absences may lead to failure of course. Students are allowed up to 2 unexcused absences.
