Introduction to Printmaking methods and concepts emphasizing multiple intaglio and relief techniques. Prerequisite: ART 220.
Syllabus
Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:
Students successfully completing this course will be able to:
- Have gained knowledge and proficiency in the use of both intaglio and relief printing techniques and be able to implement them confidently in the future.
- Become familiar with the general history of hand papermaking and how it connects to printmaking and the book arts.
- Have practiced numerous foundational print skills including designing, measuring, cutting, registering, carving, tracing and transferring, paper preparation and care, sharpening tools, and more.
- Recognize the vital ways in which seriality allows for flexibility, giving the artist a deeper understanding of their creative process and inspiring strategies toward productive studio habits including inventive and expansive use of personally created matrices. (stencils, carved blocks, copper plates, etc.)
- Have created at least four editions of prints, ready for framing, along with additional unique prints showing your attention to the intertwining concerns of personal subject matter with the visual character of each particular medium.

Attendance/Participation:
Regular attendance at all studio work sessions is expected. For obvious reasons, you must be present and attentive to truly understand the work to be done in the printmaking studio and how to handle equipment safely and properly. It is particularly bad form to miss class critiques so make every effort to be present and involved.
Attendance/Participation in 30 full class meetings= 30 points toward your final grade (Attendance is taken by hand during class time)
Course Materials Purchased by the Students:
- Rubber gloves (dishwashing-style)
- 16-gauge copper sheets, 6” x 8” or larger (2 pieces)
- Etching tools: needle, scraper, burnisher
- Bamboo baren
- Carbon/Transfer paper
- Speedball linoleum cutter
- Printing paper: Sheets of Arches cover or Rives BFK for etching; Japanese style paper for relief
- One pack of Bulk print paper, 9” x 12”
- X-Acto knife w/ extra blades
- Woodcarving sets (optional)
- Dremel tool (optional)
- Apron (optional)
