Digital Photography I

Course Description

This course serves as an introduction to digital photography. The course will offer students an overview of digital photography focused on: Manual camera operations, digital workflow, and basic digital manipulations. Prerequisite: ART 140.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Navigate and understand the mechanics of a digital SLR to make photographic Images
  • Capture images with an informed output orientation.
  • Organize and output images within the Adobe Creative Suite workflow.
  • Move images from camera, to Bridge, to Camera Raw, and into Photoshop in an informed creative workflow.
  • Understand the image correction tools of Photoshop and Camera Raw and make basic selections and masks in Photoshop.
  • Understand color management and color profiles.
  • Advance creative and critical skills toward a personal direction and portfolio.

Class participation is a vital aspect of your success in this course. It is also integral in creating an environment in which we all, collectively, help one another move forward with their work through a process of constructive criticism and support. Participation extends to all facets of the class, including:

Offering thoughtful contributions during virtual Google Slides critiques in the form of thoughtful comments

Contributing to the canvas discussions on a weekly basis.

Taking notes during lectures, demonstrations and video screenings which will be kept in your student work folder in a Notes folder.

Your participation in these areas will be noted and will comprise a portion of your final grade.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

  • DSLR
  • Memory card with a minimum of 16GB of storage capacity
  • External hard drive or flash drive (formatted for Mac computers)
  • Adobe Photoshop and Bridge. Lightroom Optional.
