Course Description

Basic course with emphasis on hand-built forms.

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Focus on hand building techniques involving all aspects of the ceramic process. All assignments, demonstrations, and lectures are designed to enhance students understanding of the history and techniques of hand built ceramics. Students will develop hand building skills by building in three dimensions and working in a variety of scale.
  • Learn the entire ceramic process from mixing their own clay, building three dimensionally, firing kilns, and finally developing glazes through the glaze calculation process.
  • Develop a greater understanding of ceramics by researching both historical and contemporary issues of ceramics.
  • Generate and develop their own ideas, learn to think critically about their work, and most of all experiment!

A Excellent, All assignments are completed on time, craftsmanship is of a superior quality. (projects are well researched, of sound construction, and the finishing process has been highly considered) Projects have been properly researched, a huge amount of time has been spent outside of class, motivated attitude, no absences, no tardiness.

B Good, Indicates general achievement superior to the standard that defined as c. It involves excellence in some aspects of the work as indicated in the definition of a. For example, your work could be very strong in craftsmanship but your research was not completed. Perhaps you were absent or tardy which affected your grade,

C average, Indicated the acceptable standard for graduating from uncg. It involves such quality and quantity of work as to be expected of a student of normal ability who gives the course a reasonable amount of attention. You can complete all assignments and still receive an average grade. Perhaps work was problematic in construction, research was not fully developed, or there was simple a lack of time spent on the project. You were absent or late too frequently.

D Lowest passing grade, Indicates work that falls below acceptable standards defined as c. For example, an assignment was turned in late, craftsmanship was lacking, ideas were not fully developed, absent 3 or more times.

F Failure, indicates failure that may not b e made up except for repeating the course.

Attendance/Participation:

Students are required to physically be in the class. Students can miss three classes total before their grade drops a letter.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

pottery tool kit (contains a variety of basic tools) rubber rib, fettling knife, cheap one inch paintbrush, small container with lid, trash bags, metal fork, small bucket, large sponge, dust masks (3pack), and a sure form tool.
