Course Description

Working from observation, students will increase their perceptual ability and skills through studio assignments. Emphasis on the comprehension of forms and structures in space. Prerequisite: ART 150

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Advance perceptual and conceptual understanding of visual analysis and conceptual development in three-dimensional form making including structure, space, and gravity.
  • Develop technical skills, processes, and aesthetic approaches to structure through three studio assignments.
  • Problem-solve by researching contemporary and historical sculptures and identify individual interests, imagination, and expression.
  • Critically evaluate the formal, conceptual, and expressive content in their work and the work of others.
  • Present intentions, methods, challenges, and strengths during critiques.
  • Engage in dialogue beyond critiques as an intrinsic part of artistic practice.
  • Experiment and embrace the art-making process as a form of inquiry and knowledge production.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance is taken at the beginning of workdays and Final Project Critiques. Students will be considered either present or absent, there is no flexibility considered for those late to reviews and critiques.

Your absence from a Final Project Critique will result in a deduction of 30 points from your grade on that project.

Excused absences from critiques must be discussed with the professor BEFORE 8:30 AM THE DAY OF CLASS; emails received during class or afterwards will not be accepted.

Excused absences do not include taking a friend to the airport, oversleeping, etc.

If you feel sick for any reason, you must reach out to the instructor prior to 8:30 AM the day of class time to communicate that you will be catching up via discussions with your peers. DO NOT COME TO THE GATEWOOD BUILDING IF YOU ARE FEELING ILL.

If you miss class for an excused absence, you should make an appointment to discuss with the instructor what you have missed.

If you miss class for an unexcused absence, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to catch up on your own and with your peers’ assistance; the instructor will not provide assistance for unexcused absences.

If you are late to class, it is your responsibility to catch up without disturbing your peers; material covered prior to your arrival will not be reviewed.

Observance of religious holidays will be counted as an excused absence only if your absence is communicated prior to the start of class.
