Course Description

Basic course which uses observation as a vehicle for learning the fundamentals of oil painting. Prerequisite: ART 120

Syllabus

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • To learn the basics of oil painting from direct observation: preparing a canvas, mixing and matching local colors, translating and interpreting color and value, and learn to sketch, rework, and resolve an oil painting.

  • To continue developing drawing skills alongside hand / eye coordination with a paint brush and palette knife.

  • To strengthen knowledge of formal terms and strategies related to painting through compositional development and critiques.

  • To begin developing individual aesthetic language and to begin articulating.

Attendance/Participation:

Three absences are permitted. Fourth absence results in ½ letter grade reduction.

Fifth absence results in 1 letter grade reduction.

Six absences will result in failing the course.

Three late arrivals (10 min after class begins) to class, or three early departures (10 min before class ends) will be the equivalent of one absence.

Students are expected to participate in critiques. During the four final project critiques, each student must contribute thoughtful, objective comments for a minimum of five of their classmates.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

  • OIL PAINT (large tubes 150 -200 ml): Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red Medium, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre

  • OIL PAINT BRUSHES: Brights (shorter than Flat, but both have square shape) #10 and #6; Filberts (has an arched shape) - #12, #8, #4; Rounds (has a circular neck) - #14 and #10

  • Palette knives set of five different shapes and sizes

  • White Gesso, quart

  • Turpenoid / Odorless Mineral Spirits

  • Glass jar w/ metal lid

  • approx. 4 oz. plastic squeeze bottle

  • Painting Medium

  • 16 x 20” wooden painting panel

  • TWO pine 2" x 4" x 8'

  • Cotton Canvas #10 or #12

  • A container, like a tackle box, for your paint and tools

  • Clamp light, white light bulb, and 5' extension cord

  • Something to put your brushes in so they stand upright (i.e. a heavy ceramic jar / a brick with holes in it)

  • *Cotton rags or heavy-duty use paper towels

  • SOAP- Ivory Soap bar / *Murphy’s oil soap- there are lots of cleaners available as well like DL Hand Cleaner, GOJO, and painting brush soaps

  • Rectangular Window Scraper

  • 3” or 4” flat gesso brush

  • Latex or Nitrile Exam gloves

  • Sandpaper 120/150 and 300 grit (two sheets each)

  • Sketchbook

  • 4B pencil

  • 12” and 36” ruler
