Studio I: Garment Construction

Course Description

An examination and evaluation of ready-to-wear apparel including terminologies, production techniques and price/quality relationships. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in APD 200.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate garment assembly techniques for specific fabrics, markets and pricing categories and apply correct ones to assigned projects.
  • Execute various assembly techniques in different types of apparel
  • Plan the apparel assembly process for different garments based on analysis of ready-to wear samples.
  • Become familiar with basic VStitcher functions for 3D Visualization of garments.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance, punctuality, and productive participation are required. Absences will have an effect on your final grade. Two tardies &/or early departures will count as one absence.

For each absence after three, the final course grade average may be reduced 3 points.

Your participation grade will also be influenced by your attendance.

Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

Presser feet, needles, bobbins, and bobbins case for Juki Machines; fabric shears, Serger Threading tweezers, straight pins, hand sewing needles; unbleached muslin 100% cotton for samples (5 yds minimum); at least 2 yard fusible lightweight interfacing for samples, two all-purpose polyester of nylon 7” zippers (skirt zippers); (note: projects will require specific fiber types and fabric constructions — be prepared to order fabric on-line or go beyond Greensboro to get necessary materials); you will need to print some patterns for yourself; others as needed for special projects.
