Course Materials Purchased by the Students:

  • Juki DDL8700 sewing machine parts: Hinged foot #24983, Split Zipper foot #40322SH or #40322 (not hinged), Bobbin Case Assembly #S03245-0-01, New Style Bobbin #40264NS (purchase at least 2 bobbins), Invisible zipper foot #S518, 16X257 #80 industrial needles
  • Fabric scissors
  • Straight Pins
  • Hand sewing needles
  • Seam ripper
  • One medium and slot screwdriver
  • 100% cotton woven printed fabric such as quilting calico. No flannel, no knits, no stretch. MUST be lighter colors – see examples shown below and in class. “Fat quarter” packs can work. Start with 3 yards of 45” wide. Do not pre-wash.
  • One yard fusible interfacing – sheer-to-lightweight. Any color. Non-woven, knit or woven. (needed for blouse project and exam 2)
  • Unbleached 100% cotton Muslin fabric for sewing samples. Purchase at least 2 yards initially. 40-44” wide is MUCH easier to handle than wider fabrics, and usually better quality for our needs. If there’s a thread count on the muslin, go for 200 count. Neatly fold your fabric or roll it on a tube. Do not pre-wash muslin. (we do not use muslin until midterms)
  • ALL PURPOSE sewing machine thread: at least two different (contrasting) colors of high quality machine sewing thread
  • One 7-9” invisible zipper any color
  • Fashion fabrics and matching thread (serger and all-purpose) for jacket project – to be discussed after midterms.
  • Appropriate container to organize supplies.
  • Notebook or folder to store class documents and handouts, pencil and paper for note taking.
  • 3-ring binder and page protectors for sample notebook
