Course Description

Designed to provide an understanding of a variety of accounting subsystems, systems analysis, and design issues reinforced through case studies.

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Explain what an AIS is, why it is important and how AIS can add value to a business.
  • Discuss the types of information that can be provided by AIS.
  • Identify technologies used by startups and small businesses.
  • Distinguish between management fraud and employee fraud and describe the fraud triangle.
  • Describe the nature of risks and explain how businesses respond to risks.
  • Explain how risk is mitigated through internal controls.
  • Explain the concepts of IT control as applied to business organizations including the relevant provisions of Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
  • Use documentation techniques to understand and evaluate information systems.
  • Describe the revenue cycle activities and evaluate the adequacy of various control procedures in the revenue cycle.
  • Describe the expenditure cycle activities and evaluate the adequacy of various control procedures in the expenditure cycle.
  • Describe the human resources management/payroll cycle activities and evaluate the adequacy of various control procedures in the human resources management/payroll cycle.
  • Describe what a relational database is and how it organizes data.
  • Summarize the five characteristics of big data.
  • Discuss the differences between descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytic techniques.
  • Describe data analytics techniques that can explore data.
  • Apply data analytics to accounting problems.

Attendance/Participation:

Attendance for face-to-face classes is mandatory. Missing three classes or more (excused or unexcused) will result in a 10-point reduction of your participation grade.

Weekly Teams meetings are held for online sections of this course. While regular attendance in Teams meetings is optional, attendance is highly encouraged so students can participate in facilitated discussions of course material and ask questions of the course instructor. Participation grades for online sections are based on a student’s overall involvement in course discussions through group Teams meetings, one-on-one Teams meetings with the instructor, and Discussion Boards in Canvas.
