Course Description

The second course in the two-course intermediate accounting sequence. Continues the examination of the preparation, presentation, interpretation, and use of financial statements. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in ACC 318

Student Learning Outcomes, Goals, Objectives:

Students successfully completing this course will be able to:

  • Examine the role and importance of the financial reporting function in society.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theory and practice underlying the preparation and presentation of financial information in accordance with United States GAAP and significant similarities and differences with IFRS.
  • Apply theory underlying the conceptual framework developed by the FASB and the guidance it provides in developing and implementing accounting standards.
  • Examine and apply critical thinking skills to judgment decisions in financial accounting.
  • Examine ethical issues inherent in financial accounting and reporting.
  • Examine the limitations of financial statements in meeting corporate social responsibilities.
  • Apply course concepts in homework assignments, quizzes, and exams.

Attendance/Participation:

Participation and in-class pop-up quiz score takes 1% of the final grade for this course.

In-class quizzes: we will have unannounced in-class pop-up quizzes in class. These quizzes will be short in nature, usually a few multiple-choice questions and/or a short-answer question or two. Please always read notes and watch the lecture videos before class to be prepared for the quiz. I will take the average of all the quiz scores for your base participation grade.

In-class policy:

(1) You are required to attend classes.

(2) Show your respect to others; no small talk; keep good studying environment; turn off your cellphone before class.

(3) You will earn portion of your in-class participation points, if you have these good behaviors in class: answer questions/participate in discuss/ ask questions;

(4) You will lose portion of your in-class participation points, if you have these unacceptable behaviors in class: Small talk/Do something on your cellphone or laptop without permission/ Be late for class/ Not show up in class without proper excuse and proof/ Use of unauthorized materials (examples: doing homework for another class, playing video games, TV, etc.), listening to music, etc. (you will be given a warning for first time)

I will take the following steps to calculate your in-class quizzes & participation points: the average of your in-class quizzes score + (add) the points you earned from good in-class behaviors listed in (3) above; - (deduct) portion of the points from unacceptable in-class behaviors listed in (4) above.
